Wallpaper Removal Before Painting: What to Expect
· By Sergio Pereira

Old wallpaper dates a room fast, and in many older homes around Boston there are layers of it. Removing it and painting is one of the most satisfying updates you can make. It is also a job where shortcuts show.
Why not paint over it?
Paint adds moisture to the paper, which can loosen the glue and make seams lift or bubble. Seams and texture also show through the paint. And when someone wants to remove the paper later, the paint makes it much harder. In almost every case, removing it first is the right call.
How removal works
Some papers peel off dry in sheets, leaving a backing layer. Others need to be scored and soaked with a removal solution or steam so the glue releases. The crew works carefully so the wall surface under the paper is not torn or gouged.
On plaster walls, which are common in older Arlington and Brookline homes, removal is usually forgiving. On drywall, the paper face of the board can be damaged if the paper was applied without a primer underneath, so it takes more patience.
The step most people skip: glue removal
After the paper is off, there is almost always adhesive left on the wall. If it is painted over, it can cause cracking and peeling in the new paint. The wall is washed until the residue is gone.
Repair and prime
Any torn spots, dents or cracks are repaired and sanded smooth. Then the wall gets a primer suited to the surface, which seals any leftover residue and gives the paint an even base. Only then do the finish coats go on.
How long does it take?
It depends on the paper, the number of layers and the wall underneath. A small bathroom can be a short job, while a stairwell with several layers takes longer. Your estimate should cover removal, repairs, primer and paint together so there are no surprises.

Frequently asked questions
- Can I remove wallpaper myself?
- Many homeowners do, especially in small rooms. The tricky parts are protecting the wall underneath and fully removing the glue before painting.
- Is primer needed after removing wallpaper?
- Yes. Primer seals any leftover adhesive and repairs, so the paint goes on evenly and does not crack.
